DAIRY FACTORY MANAGERS.
ANNUAL CONFERENCE. The annual grading conference of the Taranaiii branch oi the iNew Zealand uairy factory Managers Association was neicl at the Fatea grading stores on \\ ednesday last, 'lheie was a large attendance or managers and directors or \ano us companies. Mr. Owninn, assistant Dairy commissioner, was also present, and Mr, Sorenson, or the Danish Agricultural Department, besides the grading start ana dairy instructors. Mr. E. e,. \» oods, chief grader, bneiiy welcomed the managers and visiting directors, also introducing iur. Sorensen. in the aostnee of tne piovinciai president of the Managers’ Association, Mr. A. F. Nedson, Dominion secretary, thanked Mr. Woods for the welcome given, and expressed .tne pleasure it gave the managers to again meet in conrerenee and have an opportunity of going through the various lines of butter and cheese. An interesting morning was put in t>y grading the different lines of butter and cheese put forward, Mr. Woods explaining the points that had been allotted ior the various brands, also indicating any defects. He expressed his pleasure that the. grades were well up to last year at this period, ana in many instances showed marked improvement.
At 12.80 an adjournment was made for lunch at the Masonic Hotel, where the visitors and members of the Dairy Division were the guests of the Managers’ Association. After lunch a short toast list was gone through. After the loyal toast, had been honoured, Mr. Neilson proposed the toast of the Dairy Division of the Department .of Agriculture. He expressed the pleasure it gave the managers to again confer with the officers of ; the Division, and was pleased to see Mr. Gwillim present. He referred to the honour done the mby the presence also, of an officer of the Danish Agricultural Department in Mr, Sorensen, and specially welcomed him to the conference. The speaker thanked the grading staff for the co-operation they had always given in making the conferences so interesting and educative, and for the instructive morning they had given them. Mr. Gwillim, in responding to the toast, thanked the chairman for his remarks, and said the Department were only too pleased at all times to meet the managers and to confer with them on all matters pertaining to the improvement of the dairy produce. He expressed the opinion that the points allotted for cheese at this time of the year were higher than lie had known them, cheese grading up to 93 points, which spoke well for the managers’ work. Mr. Gwillim said the question of cheese yields had' been a burning question recently, and he proposed to give some figures of tests that had been carried out by the Division during the past year at four factories in tlm province, in which the'casein, fat, and moisture contents had been ascertained of the milk and cheese. Some very interesting data was supplied by Mr Gwillim, and he said that in making comparisons of different yields of - various factories one had to have the casein, fat, moisture, and minor substances of the cheese before a true comparison could be made Instances were given where the moisture rontent W the cheese from two factories was identical, but owing to the casein content being low in one and normal in the other, the yields for these two showed a difference, of .1 per cent. 'J his served to show that incorrect comparisons could be made without first knowing the various contents contained in the cheese manufactured lm\ Gwillim also expressed the pleasure it gave him to welcome in Mr. tjorensen,. an .officer of rbat <*reat dairying country, Denmark, and hoped his stay would be a pleasant one, in which his department would oiy e all the information they could. The toast of the West Coast Reti lgerating Company was nroposed by Mr. Illingworth, in which he welcomed the new manager who had taken Mr Grainger’s place. He thanked the manager (Mr. Hodge) for the facilities given that- day to the managers by affording space at Idm works °fo’ the proper display of butter and cheese for judging.
Mr. Hodge thanked the meeting for the toast and the way it was received, and said that although not known as yet .to many .of the managers and directors of dairy companies, he hoped to soon get into touch with all, and assured them that the company would always do its utmost to give proper care and attention to the right storage oi the dairy produce. Fhe toast of the visitors was proposed by Mr. I Lav in, and in doing so he mentioned the pleasure it gave the managers to have a representative of the Danish Agricultural Department present at the conference. He also was pleased to see some of the directors of dairy companies present, and felt sure that they would see the benefits their u)ui)U££d\s woukl receive from a conference of this kind, and that the instruction received and the interchange of ideas pertaining to factory management would he of great advantage to their respective tympanies.
Mr. Sorensen, on rising to reply, was. greeted with, applause-. He thanked the meeting for the toast and the way in which it was received, and said it gave him extreme pleasure to be present at the first function of its kind since he had arrived in this Dominion. He was also pleased in note the very cordial relation that existed between the managers and the Dairy Division’s officials. He was very glad to meet the Managers’ Association, and would be able to tell the Managers’ Association of Denmark, on his iclurn, of the great welcome’he had received in this country. Mr Sorensen then gave a very interesting address on the methods or factory work in Denmark, and mentioned that the factories in this Dominion were far larger than most of the Danish and American factories. He also stated that the factories in this counti y were very well designed and equipped. He expressed his pleasure at the very fine display of produce shown that morning, and said that good resir 1 ts would obtain by a true co-operatiua between the managers and the producers. Speaking to the toast, Mr. Taylor (chairman of directors of Hie Ngaere Co.) thanked the mangers for the invitation to he present, ami considered that all chairmen of companies (.should make it their business to attend, by which they would gain most valuahle information The chairman of the Cardiff Go. also spoke on similar lines. Apologies were received from Mr. Drash (secretary of the Dairy Control Hoard), Mi| Hull (Dominion president of the Managers’ Association), the chairman of the Oaonui, Pihama, and other companies. After lunch members returned to the works, when a grading competition was held, Mr. A. F. Nelson proving the winner with bS points. Messrs. Kilpatrick, C. Horrocks and
McOoll tieijig for .second with 97’ points.
During tlie afternoon v.ea was given the managers and visitors by the West Coast Refrigerating Go. Before dispersing Mr. Woods (provincial secretary) thanked the company for the tea, and called for three hearty cheers, which were lustily given. This concluded a very instructive and pleasant d ! ay.
