LONDON, Nov. 20. The Sirdar of. Egypt, while returning from the War Office, was fired upon " m a Cairo street, receiving serious wounds. A sensation was caused in the city, where even extremists curse the folly of the would-be assassins, whose act may have far-reachina effects. , Zagh'lul Pasha ha® stated that lie is vigorously prosecuting an inquiry. The chauffeur of the assailants’ car has been, arrested, and Zaghlul stated that he hoped this would lead to the arrest of the criminals. Ten thousand pounds was being offered for their apprehension. Viscount Allenby, Mr. Asquith, and others were lunching- at the Residency when the wounded men were brouo-iht in, causing consternation. = Major-General Stack’s® chauffeur, despite his wounds, drove at full sueed to the Residency.
LONDON, Nov. 20. from Cairo is regarded as momentous. The Foreign Office is awaitlng the fullest information from Lord -Allenby before taking action. Lady Drummond Hay, the Daily Express’ correspondent in Cairo, states: “The city is paralysed with horror. Everyone realises! the unspeakably grave significance of the crime. Even extremists are cursing the folly of it.” CAIRO, Nov. 39. The Sirdar was operated on. The bullet lodged under the lung. The stomach was full of blood.. Transfusion was proceeded with, and the sufferer’s condition is more hopeful) The intestines are not perforated, and . the transfusion ha® done good. . It is thought eight assailants were involved.
The ohauffeur of the Sirdar’s car is an Australian, who has received many tributes for driving the car to the Residency after, being, twice wounded.
