TONGARIRO PARK.
SITE FOR HOSTEL. DEPUTATION PROTESTS. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION. WELLINGTON, Nov. 20. A deputation waited on the Tongariro Park Board and protested strongly against the site chosen for the hostel and the introduction of heather and gfouse. The site favoured was Whakapapa. The chairman considered too much had been made of the point that the park would become a sporting reserve, That .was not the intention. The Minister of Lands opposed the contention that heather would interfere with the growth of forest trees later on. Mr. Salt gave notice to rescind the resolution in favour of the Haunted Whare site for the hostel A motion that the- park be regarded as an absolute sanctuary for New Zealand flora and faUna was lost by 6 votes to 5, and an amendment was carried on,the casting vote of the chairman that nothing should be introduced into the park without resolution ,by the board. It was stated that the hoard still required further contributions from local bodies and societies to provide a hostel. There are now motor roads within half a mile of the Haunted Whare and two hot baths at Wbakapapa.
