(From Our Own Correspondent.) >' A meeting of the Manaia Ladies’ Patriotic Committee was held last week and, it was decided to hold an appeal day 'on the first Tuesday in December. The object is for Christmas comforts for the returned invalid soldiers who aire in hospital in New Zealand. The object is a most worthy one, and should appeal to all. The Ladies’ PaA triotic Committee are to. be commended on their good work, and no doubt the public will respond liberally. Quite a gloom was cast over Manaia and district when the sad news came through.of the death of Josephine Margaret, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Sherlock, Kapuni, on, Sunday, November 6, at the age of 12 years, after a long illness, which the little girl bore with great patience. She was a great favourite with all who knew her, being of a very affectionate nature. Her early demise is deeply regretted. To Mr and Mrs Sherlock and family the deepest sympathy of the citizens of Manaia and district is extended.

The monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was held in the Rest Room <pn November 14. Present: Mesdames Swainson (chair), Judd, Le Fleming, Roberts, Poynter and Miss Patterson. Apologies were received from Mesdames Sutherland, Barleyman and Craig. The balance-sheet of the street stall was. approved, the profit made being £2O 12s Bd. The following subscriptions were received during the month: Mesdames Young, Autore, Snowden, Greaves. W. Burke, J. Christie, Mercer, Hislop, Wells, Crawford, Meuli senr, Geo. Meuli, Welham, Walker, Sylvester, Roberts, J. M. Clague, and Dunn. The annual meeting of the Manaia Horticultural Society was held in the Council Chamber on Friday, November 14. Present: Messrs. J. W. Snowden (chair), J. A. Hansen, A. G. Rennett, W. Duggan, E Long, H. Mead, T. Dee. It was resolved that Mr. J. W. Snowden be chairman for the meeting owing to the president (Mr. T. A. Bridge) not being able to be present. The report and balance-sheet were submitted. and were adopted on the motion of Messrs Bennett and Hansen. It was resolved to send account to football club for the hire of show building during the season. It iva s resolved that all subscriptions and rents owing to the society should be paid at once. Officers for the ensuing year were appointed as follows: Patron, Mr E Long; president, Mr. T. A. Bridge; vice-presidents, Messrs A. G. Bennett, F. Mouvie. J. S. McKay, J. W. Snowden, H. E. Sutton, R. The matter of arranging a date for the show was left in the hands of the president and secretary. It was resolved that the ladies be asked to take charge of the refreshment tents, fruit and soft drink stall. It was left in the hands of the committee to arrange the matter of a band for the show.' The revising of the schedule was left in the bands of the secretary. Hearty votes of thanks to. the press and the chairman closed the meeting.
