H.M.S. CHATHAM.
IS-SHE SEAWORTHY?
A REPORT FROM COLOMBO
Colombo naval circles have doubts on the subject, according to a cable from Colombo (states the Harbour.) Rumour, says this cable, has it that the Chatham was replaced on the New Zealand station not so much, as officially given out, because she burned coal and not oil (a yarn we never believed, for there is coal in New Zealand and no oil, while there is oil oh the East India station and no coal), but because there is grave reason to suspect her seaworthy qualities. There is no suggestion that- she is incapable of cruising around on her ordinary duties here, but it is asserted by those who ought to know that if an emergency arose the flagship would probably lie found wanting. Another rumour, which may or may not be time, is that- the Chatham on her voyage to Ceylon from New Zeailancl collided with the pier on Thursday Island, and tore a hole, which was temporarily repaired, in'her bottom. Anyhow, she is shortly to be replaced bv one of the protected E class, now completing at Home. Her commander. Captain the Hon. D. Ramsay, goes to Tie "West Indies as Flag Captain in November.
