CRICKET IN PARK.
GROUND OVERCROWDED
HIGH SCHOOL CRITICISED
When Or. Townsend, at last night’s meeting of the Hawera Borough Council, mentioned the overcrowding of school cricket teams at the Park on Thursday afternoons, Cr. Morrissey asked why the Technical High School could not keep to their own grounds. He pointed out that when the council gave the school the five acres on which the school was now located, it was understood that in handing over such an area the school would be equipped with its oavii playing fields. In connection with the reported c\ererowding on the Park cricket grounds, Cr. Morrissey said there was an element of danger while more than one game was in progress. The players in each game had their attention concentrated oil their o-wn play, and were not watching where the batsman in another game was sending the ball. He moved that it be left with the chairman i f the Reserves Committee to put the adjoining playing ground in order ‘ for cricket.—The motion was seconded.
Cr. Reid supported Cr. Morrissey’s contention, and said that the Technical High School had been given ample ground to have their own playing fields and carry out their games without interference with others. Cr. Burdekin said that while theoretically the remarks ol’ Crs. Morrissey and Reid were in order, the Technical School could do nothing without funds. They would first have to revise the whole system of capitation of technical schools. With talk of a Technical School at Manaia, it was up to the council to assist the school in their own town in every way. Unless the school had money they could not blame them for not laying down a cricket ground. Cr. Morrissey thought that a dozen or so of the big boys attending the school could soon get a cricket ground in order without any expense.
Cr. Morrissey’s motion was then put and carried.
