MATCHES AT WAVERLEY. . A meeting of first grade players of more than usual interest will take place at Waverley to-day, when Charles Webster (New Plymouth), Andrews, McDonald, Dr. Hooper (all of Palmerston North)j S. Powdreil (Wanganui), Wallace and Dickie (Waverley) will take part in a series of friendly matches. These players are well known as some of the very best New Zealand has produced, and it is certain very keen interest will he displayed in the results, and that numbers of visitors from surrounding districts will take the opportunity of being present on the pretty and picturesque Waverley courts to see these great players in action. It will be of interest to local players to recall that Wallace and Dickie are the ex-Dominion champions in doubles, and that they, although veterans, are still able to give the best of the younger players valuable assistance by their ability to demonstrate the finer points of doubles play. It is certain that their interest* is still as keen as ever, and it is the sincere hope of all players that they will long continue to foster the best interests of the great game.. Andrews, the young Manawatu champion, has also been prominent in other districts, and came close to beating; Sims, the present New Zealand champion, at the annual championship meeting at Christchurch last year, when the game went the full five sets. With the experience gained in these highclass contests he is bound to develop his powers, and is looked upon as a possible Dominion champion, Webster, S. Powdreil, McDonald, and Dr. Hooper are all capable players, prominent each in his own district. Webster especially is known all over the Dominion for his tremendous powers of hitting, his height and reach naturally giving him a great advantage. Mr. Webster is president of the Taranaki Association, and in conversation -with two of the leading Hawera players complimented Hawera on the interest displayed in the game generally. Referring to the report in the Star a few days ago, dealing with the system of grade competitions, he said it was too late to alter the arrangements for this year, and that for this season the executive intend to continue on the same lines as before. He promised that the suggestions made by Hawera would be fully discussed at the association’s next meeting He expressed the hope that all South Taranaki clubs would support the present arlieme enthusiastically until an alteration was arranged.
