NOTES AND COMMENTS. « ' (By Telegraph.—-From, Maecenas) CHJMS'I’CHUROH, Nov. 12. There was a good attendance for the off day at Riccarton. The weather was beautifully fine and the racing was most interesting and speculation was keen, the tote returns being above those of last year. Santonio, Passin’ Through and Cerebus monopolised the betting in the Port Cooper Hurdles, but for all that Passin’ Through returned a good price. Bedrock led Frisco Mail past the stand, with. Qtauru, Penury Rose and Le Forte next. Going out of the straight Bedrock opened put a gap from Otauru, Frisco Mail land Penury Rose. At the mile post Bellrock and Otauru were joined by Red Kri&s, and a little further on Otauru dropped back, the other pair going on together. They had a good lead half a mile from home, where Passin’ Through and Frisco Mail commenced to move up. Bedrock was just clear of Passin’ Through at the last hurdle, but in the run home Piissin’ Through drew out and won comfortably by two lengths. Frisco Mail was three lengths away, a length and a half in front of Le Forte. Cerehus fell and broke his neck, liis rider, W. Scobie, being badly injured. Passin’ Through won liis fifth race in succession at Riccarton, scoring very easily. Bellrock had a long lead at one stage, but had not a chance when Passin Through ranged up with him. Shirley was at a shade of odds on in the Spring Nursery and cantered in. Victory Bond and Shirley led Standard on to the course proper. The leading pair were never troubled, Shirley winning easily by a length and a half. Joyeuse was fully two lengths behind Victory Bond, with Standard a neck further back. It could not he called a race.

Palestrina, was a slightly better favourite than Bumptious in the Otaio Plate, the pair between them carrying more than half the investments 'son the machine. Mountain Lion’s second dividend was better than that of Palestrina, Palestrina and Mountain Lion showed the way from the harrier, hut after going a furlong Mountain Lion took charge, with Palestrina. Binmptions and Te Anau Lad together just behind him. Mountain Lion gradually increased liis advantage going .along the hack, and five furlongs from home he. was four lengths in front of Bumptious and Te Anau Lad, with Palestrina two lengths further back. commenced to move up at the home turn, and on landing in the straight she was close behind the leader. ''Palestrina joined Mountain Lion at the distance, and after an interesting finish Palestrina won by a neck. Bumptious was three lengths further hack and Te Anau Lad fourth. Palestrina, who had a weak field to oppose • her. atoned for several disappointments.

Bumptious hardly ran as well as his Cup running led one to expect and Mountain Lion showed a vast improvement on his recent. fonn at the meeting.

The Canterbury Cup was a great betting race, Gold Light, the favourite, only carrying £315 more than the outsider of the four, Sunart. Count Cavour went to the front soon after the. start, followed by Gold Light, Loughrea and Sunart in that order. At the end of half a mile Count Cavour was a length and a half in front of Gold Light, who had been joined by Sunart, while Loughrea was two lengths further back. They raced like this for the next half-mile, where Sunart headed Gold Light and went on just a length behind Count Cavour. There was practically no change as they raced to the six furlong post, where Loughrea commenced to close up. Count Cavour had a lead of alength from Gold Light at the five furlong post, where Sunart dropped back a little. Count Cavour w r as in trouble at the entrance to the straight. Gold Light then ran to the front, and won very easily by eight lengths from Loughi-ea, who beat Sunart in the run ho,me by three lengths, Count Cavour being two lengths further back. The time was 2.52, which equals Gasbag’s Australian record. It was a great performance by the winner, and Loughrea., who is not so well seasoned, did not disgrace himself. Sunart failed father badly. Count Cavour’e showing was not flattering to the three-year-olds.

Suggestion was backed down to a little more than even money in the Jockey Club Handicap. Then only half as well supported came Royal Divorce, Reremoan a, and Avola were the next, Wild Hind being the outsider of the field. Avola was first to break the line, but at the end of a furlong Boadicea. had taken charge, with Avola and Suggestion in close attendance.Passing the six furlong post Reremoana moved un, and a furlong further he was just behind with Avola and Suggestion handy. Racing round the turn Wild Hind put in a run on the outside, and she landed into the straight with the front division, Roval Divorce improving bis position at about the same place. On reaching the distance Wild Hind was just showing out from Suggestion, while Tarleton was moving up fast. In a fine finish Wild Hind heat Suggestion by a neck, xai leton was a length and a half away with Royal Divorce a length further Avola and Tresham next. Wild. Hind was at a false price considermg her best form. Suggestion and Royal Divorce were fairly beaten, out larleton was finishing on well. Dazzling Light was at only a little more than even money in the Oaks, Starmist, Rawene and Ilka, being the next best supported. Betrosjiect, Gardant and Rawene led out of the straight, with Starmist and DazzlinoLight next. At the mile post Starmist .-joined Retrospect in the lead, followed hv Gardant, Rawene, Jubilant and Dazzling Light, A little further on Clarinda made a forward move, and at the six furlong post Starmist was out in front, followed closely by Retrospect and Clarinda. A furlong further on Retrospect dropped back a little, Starmist goipg on fro.ni Clarinda and Rawene, with Dazzling Light next. Starmist led Clarinda into, the straight, where. Dazzling Light, was closing up. Starmist easily held her place in front and won without an effort by two lengths from Dazzling Light, who beat Clarinda, by three lengths, with Ilka two lengths further back, and Retrospect and Jubilant next. The race was lemaikable for some very bad ridin°* as Dazzling Light, Clarinda, Jubilant and Rawene were not at all well handled. Starmist, on the contrary, was ridden with go.od .judgment, by C. Emerson, and in the end won verv easily. ’

Chickwheat was favourite for the Ashley Handicap, and Fresco and Goose Step were well backed, Hungry Hill, the winner, being at a. good price. Fresco dwelt at the start, and the early leaders were Sliandre, En Route, Kilcannieh and Hungry Hill. At the home turn Chickwheat was showing up behind the leading bunch, and at the distance Hungry Hill, Chickwheat and En Route were the leaders. They finished in that order with heads between them. Shandre, Bonatie, and Kilcannieh were next. The winner is a rather useful 3wear-old colt by Bezpuian from Heatherbrae. He is as -vet

very green, but a promising galloper. Although the race was one for apprentices the form should prove fairly good to follow.

The final event was a good betting race, Top Score, Giantkiller, Imperial Spark, Kilceit, and Fool’s Paradise all carrying good money. Pool’s Paradise was the first to become prominent, hut round the top turn Moorland led Quality, llalgina, Kilceit, Fool’s Paradise and Kuliio. Straightened up for home Moorland led Halgina, Kilceit and Fool’s Paradise, and the last-named, finishing well, got up to. defeat Moorland by half a length. Kilceit was two lengths away third. Imperial Spark was fourth, and Giantkiller and Halgina were next. Fool’s Paradise, although on actual form not well handicapped, vindicated the judgment of Mr Henrys, for he ran out the last furlong well. Moorland had every chance, but did not put up much of a fight when tackled by the winner.
