BOOKMAKERS CAUGHT.
RAIDED BY POLICE

WELLINGTON, Nov. 12. As a result of raids on premises, occupied by men alleged to be carrying bn the business of bookmakers, fines totalling £4BO were imposed on four men, who admitted that they were bookmakers, and two accomplices, at the Police Court to-day. The raids, which occasioned considerable excitement, had been carefully' prepared, and in each case incriminating evidence, such as the presence of double charts, betting sheete, details of dividends, and a large amount of ash, was obtained. The books and cash were seized. In one case a bookmaker was disturbed in the act of getting out his accounts to clients.
Maurice Leon Maris, a jeweller, of Willis street, was charged with carrying on a common gaming house, and Henry Dobson was charged with assisting in the conduct of a common gaming house. Each was fined £75. Thomas Phillips and Thomas Roberts, who also carried on a big business in another part of the city, were raided, and £l4B in cash was discovered. Phillips and Roberts had been before the court before, when they were fined £IOO, and to-day they were fined £IOO. In Manners street James Donnelly was also found busy attending to betting business, and he was fined £BO. Albert Organ, a tobacconist, who also carried on the business of bookmaking, was fined £SO. and several others were fined £1 each for frequenting the place.
