OFFENDERS FINED
POLICE ACTIVITY
VARIOUS OFFENCES. That the police of Hawera are extremely active is evidenced each court day when many offenders against the Borough by-laws are asked to explain to the Magistrate why they failed to comply with the law. At the Hawera Court this morning, before Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., Wm. Davidson did not appear in answer to a charge of failing to register under the Defence Act, but the facts of the case were stated by Constable Pidgeon. A fine of 10s and 7s court costs was inflicted.
A similar charge was preferred against Michael Rodgers, who stated that he was coming in to register when lie got the summons to appear at court. , Constable Pidgeon stated that this defendant, like Davidson, ii’ et \ i ll the non-effective area, and all that was required of him was that lie should register. A fine of 10s and 7 S court costs was imposed. Gordon Wills was charged with riding a motor cycle without a front numbei, and in answer to the Magistrate explained that the front number in question was loose and dropped off Without Ins knowing anything about it. jhe Magistrate said he would give defendant the benefit of''the doubt, hut he would have to pay the costs which the country had been put to in the proceedings. A fine of 10s and 7s court costs would be imposed. •George Cyril Gumming was dealt with more severely for allowing his car to stand without a light. The police evidence was to the effect that tne car was left in a dangerous position with two wheels on the tar-sealed portion of the road. The penalty was a niie of and 7s court costs.
