LAWN MOWER SHARPENING.

A NEW TYPE OF MACHINE. An ingenious machine for sharpening lawn moiA 7 ers has recently been bought and installed by .the Keen-edge Grinding Company, 240 High street, HaAvera, and after a trial has been working most satisfactorily. The contrivance, which is an American invention, is, as quickly as it is becoming known, displacing the old method of sharpening lawn mowers by means of files and emery dust. It is a Avell-known fact that it is next to impossible to sharpen a laAvn mower accurately with a file, especially as a great ma-ny mowers made at the present time have hardened blades. If a file can be used it is a slow and tedious job at best. Some resort to emery dust, turning the wheels backAvards. The objection to this is that the clearance behind the cutting edge is reduced, which makes more surface in contact with the straight cutting bar than there was before. Consequently after the cutting edges become the least bit dull the lawn ino Aver has to lie adjusted A r ery closely, so that it tears the grass instead of shearing it, causing the moAver to run harder than ever; and the more it is sharpened by emery dust, the Avorse it becomes, and soon there is no clearance at all. Messrs Gyde and Barringer are therefore to be complimented on their enterprise, avid the fact that they are the only firm in Harvera possessing such a machine is a sufficient guarantee of extensive patronage.
