DEATH OF CAPTAIN DOWD.
VETERAN AUCKLAND MARINER
There passed away at his late residence, Bath street, Parnell, on Saturday, another of Auckland’s old and respected colonists in the person of Captain John Dowd. The deceased gentleman landed at Auckland in the year 1847 with his parents in the ship Minerva, he being only two months old at the time, his father being assistantsurgeon to Dr. Mahon. The young colonist adopted the sea himself as his profession, and liecame one of the bestknown and most successful sailing masters on the East Coast between Auckland and ' Napier, commanding vessels in this .trade for something like 50 years without an accident of any kind. Captain Dowd retired from his profession 14 years ago, but continued to take a keen interest in shipping matters and an active part in the Auckland regatta, for which on many occasions he acted as handicapper. About four months since he was stricken with a slight stroke, from which he was unable to recover, and passed away quietly on Saturday. The deceased leaves a family of one son, Mr Thomas Dowd, of Hamilton, and five daughters, Mesdames W. Mclnnis and D. Millard, of Remuera; W. Smith, of Parnell: H.' Cutler, of New Lynn; and W. McGruer, of Ngaruawahia.
