A WARM RECEPTION.

TO POWER BOARD’S REQUEST

DISCUSSION AT ELTHAM

“They must have struck a few snags and want our assistance,” said Cr Campbell on Saturday when the Eltham County Council were considering an application from the Taranaki Power Board for assistance in notifying ratepayers to cut back trees which were interfering with the reticulation work at present being carried out by the board.

Cr C. E. McGuinness, who is also a member of the Power Board, made the application verbally. He said that the board were pushing on with their reticulation work as quickly as possible, and would be indebted to the council if they would assist in notifying ratepayers to cut back trees overhanging the road in places where. it would be necessary to erect the wires. If the council would assist the workmen would be able to make greater progress.

Councillors considered that the board had ample authority to force ratepayers to cut overhanging trees, and stated that they did not see why the council should have to do the Power Board’s work.

Cr E. J. Gifford: I think the Power Board has the power. Cr A. .Campbell: They seem to have plenty of power when it comes to levying rates! v Cr Barker: While some of their men are hanging around watching their mates dig a hole they could get to work and cut the trees themselves. After some further discussion* the council decided to take no action in the matter.
