HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.
REVALUATIONS. At the monthly meeting of the Hawera County Council on Saturday, correspondence was read showing what had been done in the matter. A letter had heen received in September from Air. Corrigan notifying that revaluation would not be done for another year, and a reply had been sent that a strong effort should be made to have the work done at once. A similar letter was sent to the Prime Alinister and the Valuer-General and to the Government Valuer, Wanganui. Details of dates of last valuations were sent to Air. 0. Hawken, M.P. The chairman drew attention to the promise of the Prime Minister that a revaluation should be made next year. During a short discussion members stressed the urgent need of early action and the manner in which it pressed on landowners. Cr Hawken urged that they should press the matter and get the revaluation done this year. He said the tax was a serious handicap to settlers, and added probably 50 per cent to the taxes. The hardship was more in the matter of land tax than in rating. The clerk mentioned that the increase between 1914 and 1919 was equal to 68 to 73 per cent. The chairman agreed that It was only justice to ratepayers to secure a revalution at once, so as to avoid paying an extortionate amount of taxation, which was quite wrong and inequitable. A motion was carrie.d that agitation be continued, asking the Government to have a revalution to take effect from April.
