There .were 106 applications for the position. Senator H. C. Lodge has suffered a second stroke and is lying a.t the print of death (states a New York c; bio). There will have to be a new Republican leader in the Senate.
The Thames County Council has, states a Press Association message, appointed Mr James Higgins county engineer out of 18'applicants. Mr Higgins has heen engineer to the Hauraki Plains County Council for two years, but resigned recently.
The ilLness of the Hon. 0. Pnmuel, Chairman of Committees of the Legislative Council, was referred to dm.rg the final sitting of the. Council. On the motion of Sir Francis IVM the Council placed on record its regret at the absence of Mr Samuel dn’ing the last days of the session, and its hcpe that he would soon recover, mi 1 that he would be able to take his seat again next session.
Mr William Barr, one of Pa tea’s oldest and most respected residents, died on Friday at the age of 71 >ears. The deceased, who had been in iailing health for some time past, was wellknown throughout the district for his sterling character and kindly dist osition. 110 till quite recently be had been a member of the staff of Messrs R. A. Adams and Sons, Ltd., with whom he had been for 33 years. He is survived bv Airs Barr and family of two, Air Frank Ban 1 , of the Public Trust Department, Dunedin, and Aliss Barr, Pa£ea.
Mi* James Alexander Boswell, Christchurch, manager of the Westport Coal Company, died at this residence on Wednesday. The late Air Boswell was born at Airdrie, Lanarkshire, Scotland, 63 years ago, and he arrived in New Zealand in 1850, landing at Dunedin. He tpok up a position as assistant librarian at the Dunedin Athenaeum, and remained there until he joined the ataff of the Westport Coal Company in 1886. He was paymaster at the mines for about 17 years, when he was promoted to Christchurch 'as branch manager, and resided there ever since. Air Boswell is survived by a widow and three children.
