SCHOOL SPORTS.

f — : TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL. INTERESTING RACING WITNESSED. The Hawera .Technical High School boys’ annual sports gathering was held on the show grounds yesterday afternoon and proved a most successful fixture. The boys showed a keenness which was most commendable, and with the assistance of the teachers provided a programme of events which was full of interest. The weather was fine, but although a stiff head-wind added seconds to the times in the sprints, the racing was, taken all round, of a high standard. The invitation race was won comfortably by Nutting, of the Stratford Technical High School, but Hawera boys filled the second and third places. In the school championship events C. Sturrock put up a most meritorious performance by winning the 100 yards, I 220 yards, 440 yards, and 880 yards •flat and the 120 yards hurdles. In the intermediate championships J. Gower and G. Nicholas divided the honours, the former winning the 100 yards; 220 yards, and BSO yards flat. Honours in the- senior championship events were well distributed, I. Nicholas doing best by winning the 440 yards flat and the 120 yards hurdles." F. Owen figured well in the 100 yards handicap, which „was run in six lieats, and won the final in that event. W. Philips’ win in the 880 yards handicap is also worthy of special mention, in view of the fact that" he ran the distance comfortably in 2min. 39 2-ssec., equal to the championship record time. C. Pilkington showed great staying power in the two-mile cycle race, and won that event by a large margin. He was out on the linvt, and the remainder of. the held only closed the gap by a few-yards at the conclusion of the race.
