TAR'ANAKT CENTRE. | a FIRST ANNUAL -MEETING. \ The first annual meeting of dele- \ gates of the Taranaki Centre of the [ New Zealand Amateur Swimming j Association was held at the New Ply- { mouth Soldiers’ Club on Monday < night, when practically every affiliat- 1 ed club was represented. The presi- | dent (Mr. W. H. Moyes) was m the,* chair. i Moving the adoption of the annual | report and balance-sheet, details of |; which have already been published, the chairman said the fact that a credit balance of over £5) was shown on the first season’s working was very satisfactory. He was pleased to note the revival in swimming that had taken place in the schools, especially in the country, where really excellent work had been done. Some of those country schools had had no facilities, but had gone to work and dammed up creeks where they received their instruction and thereby were able to secure a number of certificates. Some of the schools in New Plymouth had not been taking up the work seriously, and he hoped that this season these would come into line , with the others. It was noted that Wanganui Centre,' under which Taranaki had worked for the early part of last season, had established a record for the number of certificates issued. That no doubt j had been made possible bv the excellent work done in Taranaki, and he hoped that for this season Taranaki Centre would be the holder of the record. The report and balance-sheet were then adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected’’'as follow: —President, Mr. W. H. Moyes; vice-presidents, all presidents of affiliated clubs and Messrs. P. J. Dean, Fagan, j. Reid (Wanganui), A. R. Standish, E : . Whittle, L. A. Nolan; chairman, Mr. F. J. Eggleton; secretary and treasurer, Mr. F. J. Messrs. L. B. Webster and N. B. Bellringer. In reference to the levy of Is a member that is being imposed by the New Zealand Association to build up an overseas representative fund, the Ladies’ Life Saving Club wrote asking that representations be made that the levy upon ladies should be reduced to 6d. In New Plymouth the Ladies’ Life Saving Club, it was said, had many branches of s-port, and one of its objects was to teach young girls the nrt of swimming and life-saving, and it was felt that such a levy would affect membership.—These views were agreed with, and it was decided. to recommend to the New Zealand Swimming Council that in the case of lady members of clubs and members of ladies’ clubs the levy should be reduced to 6d per member. In regard to tepid baths the cha’r man explained that the sub-committee .-Ot no to deal with the matter had met the Borough Council during the vear and had received a sympathetic l On going into the maf’-'v tbo-o”ghlv it was found that the .'■eherne would he much bigger than at first expected, and the matter of securing an estimate to place before the had been held in abeyance. He

thought now . the centre should •• take the matter up and get the estimate, which would have to be paid for, in order that the council could again be approached. It was stated by Mr. Howell that ft was quite possible the Borough Council would allot another club night at the baths, and it was proposed to make this extra night, a united club night, when members of all clubs could take part in competitive events, half of the proceeds to be devoted to building up a fund to send representatives to championship meetings. It was hoped that the clubs would give their support should the proposal be put into jeffect. i A discussion took place regarding the I protection of clubs against the general | use of distinctive club colours., and it was decided to write to Sydney for information as to how control tvas effected there, and as to the measures adopted to prevent the illegal use cf the costumes worn by members of the various clubs. It was pointed out that if members of surf clubs were not easily distinguishable they could not he quickly sought for in cases of accident. The New Zealand Association advised that the following standard scratch marks had been set and would apply to all centres during the season (the standards apply to first-class handicaps only): 331-3 yards. 16sec. for men and 19sec. for' ladies; 50 vards, 26sec. and 29sec.; 66 2-3 yards, 1 36 sec. and 43sec.; 100 yards, 59see. and 66sec.; 220 yards, 2m'in. 33sec. and 2min. 47sec.; 440 yards, omin. 44see. and 6min Bsec.; 880 yards. 12min.
