REDUCED RATES.

CARRIAGE OF BENZINE ON RAILWAYS. Mr E. J. Guthrie, 'acting-station-master at Hawera., has sent the following letter to the secretary of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce (Mr R. S. Sage), showing the reduced rates for the carriage of benzine: — “Confirming our verbal conversation this morning, I wish to bring under notice that it has been decided as part of the Department’s scheme to counter motor competition to reduce the rates for the carriage of benzine as under : In lots of under 1 ton, class “A” rate, plus 22) per cent; in lots of 1 ton and over, class “B” rate, plus 25 per cent. The reduction takes place on and after Monday, 3rd inst., and applies to motor spirits, distillate, gasoline, naptha, naptha line, benzole, and benzoline. Tne following table shows the new rates between the principal stations in this district and Hawera and for comparative purposes the old fates between the same points:— New rates.
