SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH.
IN DAIRY INDUSTRY. DEFINITE PROPOSALS MADE. COMPANIES TO DECIDE, That a definite proposal to establish a laboratory for scientific research in the. dairying industry in Taranaki should be submitted to the dairy, companies for their support, was the decision arrived at by the executive of the Federation of Factories yesterday. Speaking on the necessity for the .establishment of a laboratory, the 4 chairman (Mr J. 4. Winks) said that members would recollect that this was . a matter which had b.een emphasised fairly strongly at previous meetings. The executive had gone'into, the question as far as possible, and. they had ' come to the conclusion that there would be a. better chance of getting th e institution established if the coin” panics would do something to help themselves—not rely on’ the" 3 Goverhment entirely. The executive had theretore approached the Education 1 Board w ith a view* to getting a room m the old Hawera Technicar School, and the position now was that they could nave the room-’ at a. nominal rental, at the pleasure of the Board. Ihen there was the matter of: equipment. The cost bad been reckoned lit about £3OO. which ivould have to be guaranteed by the executive/ The cost of an expert, of course, was additional, and Mr ‘ Corrigan and Mr Hawken /had busied themselves with/ the Minister arid the Government, and the Minister h?d promised to bring tV 9 matter before* .Cabinet and strongly, recommend a grant of. £BOO per annum for two years. If this grant were ohtamed it would be a great help to the executive. Continuing, Mr. Winks, said that, a laboratory would have to come. The Government had a major scheme, and if they could erect their own college and give Taranaki its own portion be did not think Taranaki would experience any trouble. Both Mr. Sngleton and Dr. Reakes had expressed sympathy towards the executive's project. '.' In conclusion, Mr, Winks said that in the event of being turned down by the Government he wanted gn expression from those present as to how far the dairy companies would go in helping themselves. Speaking on the- matter' of obtaining the room in .the old Technical Pyhool. Mr. A. Lees said that the only difficulty was the securing of a lengthy tenure. \ Mr. Johnson said it would be a. pity to have to move out of a. room at a month’s notice, but the chairman explained that the equipment would consist of nothing that could not be moved ouickly and without loss. Mr. J. R.. Cprdgau. M.P.. said that assuming they did not get anv assistance from the Government the amount which it would he necessary for each duirv eompauv to subscribe annuallv would be verv, little. w In reply to- Mr. Gane. the chair-,-man said it would cost about £IOOO a year to run the laboratory. There wa,s some further discussion, - and finally, on thp' motion of Messes. Corrigan and J. Marx, the followiog resolution 'was_ passed: “That the executive submit a- proposal to members of the Federation th»t a laboratory be established bv the factories themselves, that each factory be asked to state its .willingness or otherwise to support the scheme, and that the Government be urged ’to grant a subsidy.” '
