COMMENTS ON THE DERBY. tIY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, Received Nov. 3, 1.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Nov. 3. Commenting on the result of the Victorian Derby the Sydney Morning Herald says: Numerically the field was up to the average, but it cannot be said the classic event had attracted tlnee-year-olds with staying powers. It is doubtful if ever the Derby was won with greater ease. It appeared nothing more than an exercise gallop to Spearfelt, who made a magnificent run over the last two furlongs and came home on his own, with his rider holding him well in hand. It was evident that he could have won. by several more lengths than he did. Regarding Gloaming’s win the Herald says it was one of the easiest wins he had for some time. The Telegraph observes; Having his first race on his native soil Gloaming made the opposition look cheap.
