AN URGENT NEED.
TARANAKI-AUCKLAND RAILWAY. IMPORTANCE AGAIN. STRESSED. The necessity for the early comple-tion-of the Taffanaki-Auckland railway was again stressed last night by members of the Hawera Chamber of Commerce, when, a letter was received "rom the Taranaki Chamber asking the Hawera Chamber to telegraph to the Prime Minister, the Minister of Pubic AVorks land the member for the district, the Chamber’s opinion on the reatment the railway had received in the recent Public AYorks Statement. Mr. B. McCarthy moved: ‘‘That this Chamber endorses the views expressed by the New Plymouth, Stratford and Eltham Chambers at the delay in pushing on the TaranakiAucktand railway, and that this resolution be conveyed to the Prime Alims-‘-■er, the Alinister of Public AVorks aiid the member for the district.” Mr. McCarthy said that the railway was also a vitally important one to Auckland. Taranaki people had been 'ed to understand that .the work would be pushed on immediately the Otira line- was finished, and it was a. matter of regret that the Government had not kept their word. ■Air. E- O. Fletcher, in seconding, •(tressed' the necessity for co-operation in the matter. > Mr. L. A. Bone thought they, should give the Government to. understand '■.hat they, should not make such promises if they did not: intend to carry them out. . The motion ■was 'carried after some liscussion. and another motion, moved by Mr. H. B. Burdekin and (seconded by Mr. E. Evans, recommending the council to push the matter throughout the year, was also carried.
