BIG HAULS

WITH OPOSSUM SKINS. A PROFITABLE TRADE. THE ROYALTIES QUESTION. (By Telegraph—Specal to Star.-) WELLINGTON, Oct. 31. In putting forward a plea for the readjustment of State royalties on opossum skins Mr. Wilford (Leader of the Opposition) gave the House some surprising figures regarding the yield to licensees in the business. He said it had become a big thing. The royalty was Is per skin, and the average price during the last four year s had been 6s 9d a skin. There were 40,000 skins taken last season; 20,000 had been taken from the Hutt Valley this year, and 7353 from one camp alone. In that district the royalty was fixed when skins were worth 10s to 11s, and as TO per cent, were taken from private land he asked the Minister of Internal Affairs to cut the present royalty in half.

Mr. Bollard replied that this was the first time he had heard of the matter, but he would look into it.
