Sergeant Henry left Hawera this morning for Christchurch . and the South island on his annual leave. His position will be taken by Sergeant Martin, of New Plymouth. Mr. E. S. Craven, M.A., has- been selected as the Canterbury nominee for the Rhodes scholarship. He is prominent in Rugby and ..boxing circles.— Press Assn. Mr. C. E. Armstrong, late district engineer of the Public Works Department at Gisborne, who has retired on superannuation after forty years’ service, was met yesterday by representatives of local bodies and public organisations in the Poverty Ba.y district and made tlie recipient of an illuminated address and cabinet gramaphone in appreciation of his valuable work in the district during his twenty-three years’ service in Poverty Bay .-e-Press Assn.

Mrs R. E. Williams, of Kaponga, who during the past seven months has been absent on a tour of Great Britain, returned home on Wednesday evening. During her enjoyable holiday Mrs Williams visited relatives and friends in various parts of England, Scotland and Wales, and saw many places of interest. including the- Empire Exhibition, with which she was greatly impressed. In the colonial sections Mrs Williams favoured; the Canadian and New Zealand exhibits, and referring to the latter expressed particular admiration of the ingenious portrayal of our dairy produce, making special mention of the ’ife size figure of a dairy cow modelled in butter. Oh the journey to Europe the Panama route was taken, and the return was made via Suez,, the round trip affording sight-seeing opportunities of which Mrs Williams took every advantage. She has intimated, however. that the scene which afforded greatest delight was the family gathering which assembled at her ‘Kaponga home on Wednesday evening to extend welcome greetings.
