Asquith accepted defeat most, composedly, and smiled when he told Mrs. Asquith and Lady Bondham Carter when the result was about to be declared, “I am down.” Addressing his supporters subsequently, Asquith said he was profoundly disappointed Avith the result but they must accept the decision in _ the spirit of sportsmen and true Britons.
Miss Margaret Bondfield, speaking at Northampton, referred to the way the party was handicapped by her absence in Canada in the early part of the campaign,. and declared that some of the statements made about the Labour Party, and incidentally about herself, u ere scandalous. They Avere bringing political fighting and the Conservative Party down to the level of fights in the old rotten boroughs, when there Avas nothing but misrepresentation and corruption; As a sequel to disorderly scenes at Battersea Town Hall on election night five mem Avere charged a,t the Police Court. The Conservative slogan, “Vote for the Union Jack against the Red flag, ’ led to an. exciting affray outside the Leyton- Town Hall last night/ Labour supporters ‘ paraded in front of the building bearing the Red flag, which Avas several times pulled doxvn. Than the Union Jack appeared, and was greeted Avith cheers and counter-cheers. Suddenly a rush was made ior the Union Jack. ; There Avas a short, sharp fight, in which policemen were struck and their helmets knocked off. Finally the flag Avas re-lioisted amid cheers, and the appearance* of mounted comparative quiet.
CONSERVATIVE GAINS. S - 103 FROM LIBERALS. 52 FROM LABOUR. (Received Oct. 31, 2.30 p.m.) • LONDON, Oct. 30. The gains are: Conservatives, 52 from Labour, 103 from Liberals. Labour, from Liberals 16, from Conservatives 7. Liberals, 9 from Labour. Communist, 1 from Liberate. There were two blister Conservative gains, defeating Sinn Rein Republicans. The Minister Slesser has found a seat at South-east Leeds, replacing O’Grady, the new Governor of Tas” mania. Sir Patrick Hastings, whose action over the Workers’ Weekly precipitated the election, was elected for Wallsend. James Brown, Labour’s High Commissioner to' the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, was elected for Ayr and Bute South with a maiorlty of 1007. Mr. MacDonald’s son was defeated. Bepkett regained Gateshed for Labour from a Liberal (Dickie), in a three-cornered fight by a majority of 9326 over the Conservative, Captain Phijipson, whose wife succeeded him in the House of Commons, when he was unseated on the petition of Dickie, was at the bottom of the poll. ’ Sir Robert Horne was .elected for Hillhead, and Sir John Simon for Spen Valley in straight fights' The Conservative Craig gained Crewe, defeating the Labourite’ barrister Hemmerde with a maioritv of 3628. Mrs. Dollar, a Labourite was- at the liottoin of the poll. Admiral Gaunt (Conservative) was re-elected for Buckrose with a majority of 3004 in a straight fight against a Liberal. Ronald McNeil (Conservative) was elected for Canterbury with a maioritv. of 9632 ovgr the Liberal. A Conservative (Major Tasker) gained East Islington in a triangular contest against Dr. Ethel Bentham. A Liberal, A. S. Comyrs-Carr. and Commander Burney, of airship fame, were elected. Mrs. Wintringham (Liberal) was defeated in a straight fight with a Conservative, Louth. Major Astor, the Conservative owner of the Times, Was elected for Dover in a straight fight with Labour with a majority of 13,559. Woliuer was elected for Aldershot in a straight-out contest with Labour. VICTORS AND VANQUISHED. Received Oct. 31, 11.35 a.m. LONDON. Oct. 30. Chappie (Liberal') lost Dumfries to the Conservative, General Gharteris, in a. triangular contest bv a maioritv of 4246. ‘ ” Churchill (Conseravtive), 19.843, defeated Sharp (Liberal) 10,080, and MePhie (Labour), 3260. The Duchess of Atholl, in a straight fight with Labour, had a maioritv of 8279. '
The Under-Secretary for War (Atlee) was elected in a triangular fight for
1 th© Limehouse division of Stepney by a majority of 6022. Mr Snowden was elected in a triangular contest for Colne Valley, liis majority being 3243. Will Thorne, the founder of the Labour Party, was elected for AA"est Ham in a straight fight with a Conservative, by a reduced majority of 8000. The Deputy Speaker, Robert Young, was elected for .Newton in a straight fight with a Conservative. His majority was 2802. Worthington Evans (Conservative) was elected for Colchester in a straight fight with jLabour. The Minister of Pensions (Roberts) was elected for AVest Bromyrich in a straight fight with a Conservative. The Manchester representation is completed. There are now six Conservatives, four Labourites and Liberalites. Hugh Edwards was elected for Accrington, defeating the Labourite Roden Buxton. He is a supporter of the Conservatives. The ex-Ministef, Sir Samuel Hoare (Conservative) was elected for Chelsea with a majority of 8155. It was a three-cornered fight, in which the Labourite, Mrs Bertrand Russell, and the Liberal, Aneurin AYifiiams, took part. —Reuter. Major-General Seely (Liberal) lost the Isle of. Wight to a Conservative, whose minority in a triangular contest was 5402. Shinwell was defeated. Sir Alfred Butt (Conservative) retained Balham and increased his majority to 10,708 in a straight fight against Labour, the Liberals having stood aside. Sir A. Burgoyne (Conservative) won Aylesbury from a Liberal in a keen three-cornered fight, with a majority of 6558. Sir G- Strickland gained Lancaster from a Liberal (O’Neill) in a threecornered fight, converting a Liberal majority of 5500. into a Conservative majority of 4158. Morris (Labour) was at the bottom of the poll in the Oswestry division of Shropshire, which Bridgman retained in a three-cornered fight by an increased majority of 8173 "over the Liberal. A Labourite, Mrs. E. Penny, was defeated in a triangular contest at North-Egst Leeds, where a Conservative was elected. The notable criminal lawyer Sir Curtis Bennett (Conservative) gained Chelmsford in a triangular contest. Ben Spor elected Sir Alfred Aloud, whose son'Henry was defeated for the Isle of Ely, where a Conservative, Sir H. A r . Lucas-Tooth, aged 21, was successful in a triangular contest. A Labourite (Harney), a Liberal (Sir Hunter AVeston), and a Conservative were elected for South Shields and Ayr and Bute Northern respectively. A Conservative (Captain Styles) gained Sevenoaks from the Liberals. ' A Conservative, army Captain Beamish, was elected for Lewes, defeating the Labourite. Naval Captain Basil Hall won Coventry, where the extremist Purcell, who was shortly going to Moscow, was defeated in a triangular contest, though a strong Labour stronghold. Major Boyd Carpenter, ex-Minister of Labour, forced .a triangular contest at Eastbourne, but Sir Lloyd, ex- . Governor of Bombay, was elected with a majority of 13,365. —Reuter. Received Oct. 31, 1.35 p.m LONDON, Oct. ‘ 30. At Aberavon the Premier’s (Mr. MacDonald’s) figures were 17.724, Williams (Liberal) 15,624. A Minister, Gosling, was elected for A\ 7 hitechapel, defeating the Liberal (Nathan). At Carnarvon Air. Lloyd George • polled 16,058, Professor Zimmern (Labour) 3301. Airs. Hilton Philipson (Conservative) was elected in a triangular contest for Berwick. A Alinister, Adamson, was elected for the Cannock division of Staffordshire. _ Alinister Sidney AA r ebb, AVilligm Graham, and Noel Buxton were elected for Sealiam, Edinburgh Central, and Norfolk respectively.—Reuter.
