THE BRYCE CASE. OPERATION UNNECESSARY. A DOCTOR’S OPINION. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATIOV- • PALMERSTON N , Oct. 30; Ihe hospital inquiry arising out of the complaints made bv J. J. Bryce, Knvitea concerning the admission of his daughter to Palmerston .North Hospital, was continued' this morning, Mr Page, S.M., presiding. Further evidence was heard from witnesses on behalf of Bryce. Called on as a witness on behalf of tlis honorary medical staff, D,r D. H. Bett stated that last year approximately 500 operations, excluding those tor eyes, tonsils and adenoids, had been' performed by the honorary staff at the Palmerston North Hospital.- At the lowest computation these, -in private -h practice, would realise £ls 15s eadh. u ltness endorsed the opinion of other doctors that an one ration to Miss Bryce was unnecessary. He. usually accepted the word of a patient regarding the financial position. AVitness would welcome the transfer of responsibility to fc;ie secretary of a hospital hoard as to the financial statu?, of a. patient. , the commissioner: He considered it_ his duty to the profession to refuse solplv cm the grounds of anility to pay for private .treatment.' Dr. D. o. Wylie, expressed a. similar opinion in regard to the free' treatment or those who-could pay, and said he had refused permission to enter the hospital in such .cases by transferring the onus on to the hospital authorities. Witness approved of D,r Barnett’s action in respect to Mbs Bryce’s case. The sitting was adiourned till tomorrow morning.
