VACCINATION OPPOSED.
CHARGE AGAINST DOCTOR. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Oct. 29. There were wild scenes at the close of the trial of Dr. Hadwen, the Gloucester anti-vaccinationist, who was charged with manslaughter, arising out of the death of a girl from diphtheria. When the jury returned with a verdict of not guilty, loud cheers broke out in the crowded court, such as are rarely heard 1 in a court of justice, and the officials were powerless to stay the outbreak. A larger crowd outside vociferously demonstrated when they heard that the doctor had been acquitted. Dr. Hadwen, in a series of answers to the judge, declared that he did not believe in the efficacy of anti-toxin treatment. The injection of poisoned horse blood into the human body was unscientific and contrary to nature. He discarded the whole germ theory of disease as unscientific.
Mr. Justice Lush: If the majority of doctors favour anti-toxin and the official statistics show that it has reduced the diphtheria irate by one-third, does not this make your responsibility very heavy?
Dr Hadwen: The whole profession once favoured bleeding.
