A Labourite gained a footing in Birmingham, whicli has been solidly Conservative for forty years, Denniston, a Labourite, defeating the Conservative, Austin (the motor manufacturer), and a Liberal, Frewer. A Labourite, Dr. Salter, gained Bermondsey West from the Liberal, the Rev. Kedward, by a majority of 2902. A Communist, Stewart, was among the three defeated at Dundee, where Morel and Scrymgeour were elected. An ex-taxi-driver, Ben- Smith, a Labourite, was elected for Rotheriiithe. A Minister, Tom Griffiths- was elected for Pontypool. The Liverpool representation has beeh completed by the election of eight Conservatives, two Labourites, one Independent Liberal, and a Constitutionalist. . Captain Guest gained Bristol North from a Labourite, Ayles. The Liberal ex-Minister Walter Runciman gained Swansea West in a three-cornered fight, wherein the economist Hewins was the Conservative candidate. A Labourite was elected for Swansea East. Bristol, where pacts designed to exclude Labour originated in 1923, completed representation with two Conservatives, one Labourite, and two Liberals. Sheffield, where there were straightout fights in all divisions, no Liberals standing, returned three Conservatives and four Labourites. The Conservatives gained Birkenhead East, Hackney North and Hackney Central from the Liberals, owing to Labourite candidatures. Dr. Stella Churchill -was unsuccessful at Hackney North. She was known as the “pink Socialist” owing to the charm with which she preached Socialism. Cable, messages received this morning shotw it is now beyond question that the Conservatives have been returned by an overwhelming majority over the other two parties combined. Approximately 600 results have been received up to the time of going to press, but the fact that the Conservatives have captured no fewer than 397 out of the 594 results received to date makes it patent that the Conservatives will be in power, '•

how polling went. SOME BIG SURPRISES. LONDON, Oct. 30. The outstanding features of the election results are as follows: Mr H. H. Asquith (the Liberal leader) was defeated by 2228 votes at Paisley. Mr Arthur Henderson (Home Secretary) was elected for Burnley in a three-cornered fight bv a majoritv of 4465, compared with 7037 in the February by-election, in a straight fight with a Conservative. Mr Kinloclc Cooke defeated Sir Donald McLean (Liberal) at Cardiff East. Mr Austen Chamberlain (Conservefive), Sir Hamar Greenwood (Liberal), and Sir Newton Moore (Conservative) were successful. Mr V. Leach (Under-Secretary for Air), Bradford Central, is ainon** the defeated. . A. Labourite succeeded in his intention of defeating the Liberal’s chance at Nottingham Central, where a Conservative (Mr Bennett) gained the seat from the Liberals by a majority of 8255. Mr Baldwin’s son, Oliver, a Labourite, was defeated at Dudley, but reduced the Conservative majority to 885. The Liberal candidate stood down. Sir "W. Lugden (Conservative) gained Hartlepool, defeating the Liberal (Mr W. A. Jowitt), who voted for the Government in the Workers’ Weekly ease division. Sir W. Lugden’s majority was 3353. Mr Jowitt’s majority last December was 144. In a three-cornered fight Major Oowen (Conservative), who lost both legs in the war, retained the Fairfield division of Liverpool, defeating Mrs Mercer, the Mayor-elect of Birkenhead, by a majority of 5865. ’ Mr R. A. Taylor (Labour), the Mayor-elect of Lincoln, gained Lincoln from the Conservative candidate (Mr Davies) in a triangular fight by a majority of 39. ting division of Manchester in a threecornered fight with a majority of 1065. Mr Tom Mann was defeated in Notts East in a three-cornered fight, a Conservative gaining the seat. Nottingham is now represented by three Conservatives and one Labourite. General Sir A. Holland (Conservative) gained Northampton from the Labour candidate, Miss Margaret Bondfield (Secretary for Labour), in a triangular fight, the Liberal being a boot manufacturer, Mr Mansfield. Mr Stephen Walsh (Minister , for War) was re-elected for the Inee division of Lancashire, defeating the Conservative candidate (Colonel Gabriel), late of the Indian Civil Service. A Conservative (Mr Duff-Cooper) gained one seat at Oldham from Labour, the second seat being retained by Sir Edward Grigg (Liberal). During the campaign Lady Diana Duff-Cooper promised to dance in public in wooden clogs if her husband was returned. Mr F. W. Jowett, Labour member for Bradford East, was defeated, a Liberal capturing the seat. Mr. L. 0. Amerv (Conservative), a former Colonial Secretary and First Lord of the Admiralty, was re-elected. Miss Susan Lawrence, one of Labour’s women members in the last Parliament, was defeated. Mr T. J. Macnamara (Liberal) was behind on the first count. Mrs Muriel Porter was beaten at Hastings. Mr C. P. Treleaven (Labour) defeated the New Zealander (Mr F. M. B. Fisher) at Neweastle-on-Tyne. Mr Saklatvala, the Communist, beat. Mr Hogbin for Battersea North. Sir Harry Brittain (Conservative) was re-elected, beating Mr Levinson. Lady Astor (Conservative), Britain’s first woman M.P., was re-elected for the Sutton division of Plymouth. The Liberal housing expert, Mr Edward Simon, was defeated for Whitington division of Manchester by a Conservative, Mr Watts, by a majority of 3198, in a four-cornered fight.

The famous oarsman, Mr R. C. Bourne (Conservative), retained Oxford with an increased majority of 5360. ‘ '

The Liberals gained the University of Wales, defeating Labour. Mr Christian, a Pacifist Labourite, won Barnsley, though the Conservative stood down to give the Liberal a straight fight, but the majority was reduced to 953. The intervention of the Liberals at Exeter and Farnworth, in Lancashire, resulted in an increase in the Conservative majority at Exeter to 8163 and a decrease in the Labour majority at Farnworth to 2806.

Miss Wilkinson, a Labourite, the first woman elected, gained Middlesborough in a three-cornered fight. Mr Neville Chamberlain (Conservative) held Ladywood (Birmingham) against a hot attack by Mr Oswald Mosley (Labour) with a majority of 77, the Liberal candidate polling only 539. The result was announced after five recounts.

It is notable that both Mr Arthur Henderson’s sons were beaten, Arthur junior in Cardiff and William in Enfield.

The personal popularity'of Mr J. H. Thomas (Colonial Secretary) in the railway centre of Derby assured his reelection, but he was chagrined by having a Conservative colleague at West-, minster (Mr Luce), who defeated Mr Haynes, the second of the Labour string, by 250 votes. Mr Tom Mann, who stood as'a Communist in Nottingham East, forfeits his . deposit.

Mr E. Ashmead-Bartlett gained Hammersmith North from a Labourite (Mr Gardner). He was the author of the famous despatch describing- the Anzac landing at Gallipoli. Despite Mr Lloyd George’s intervention in North-west Camberwell, Mr T. J. Macnamara was at the bottom of the poll, being 4500 below the Conservative. It is recalled that Lady Bonham Carter (daughter, of Mr H. H. Asquith) said on Tuesday that her father would not stand again if defeated. Lord Eustace Percy (Conservative) was re-elected for Hastings, defeating the Labourite. Mrs Mary Hamilton was one of the unsuccessful Labour candidates at Blackburn, where Mr J. Duckworth (Liberal) and Sir S, Henn (Conservative) were re-elected. A Conservative gained Bath from a Liberal in a three-cornered contest in which a Labourite intervened to spoil the Liberal’s chances. The Labourite, Mr Petliick' Lawrence, the eriginator of the capital levy scheme, was, re-elected in "Leicester West. Sir Walter Defrece (Conservative), husband of Vesta Tilley, gained Blackpool from a Liberal (Colonel Meyler). The Parsee Communist, Mr S. Saklatvala, regained Battersea North by a majority of 502 from Mr Hogbin (Liberal), who ousted him last December. Mr Hogbin is the leader of the Liberal group which tends to support the Conservatives.

Mr Masterman, a former Liberal Minister, was defeated by Mr Merriman (Conservative) in a. three-cornered fight for the Rusholme division of Manchester, where a Communist, Mr Paul, was assisted by Mr Campbell, editor of the Workers’ Weekly. The veteran Labourite, Mr J. Sexton, was re-elected for St. Helen’s, Lancashire, defeating Miss Pilkington (Conservative). Mr Asquith, having been defeated at Paisley, retires from public life in accordance with his announced intention. The successful candidate at Paisley was the Labour advocate, Mr Rosslyn Mitchell, whose majority was 2228. Mr W. Leach (Under-Secretary for Air), who was defeated in Bradford Central, was famous for his pacifist, speeches when in office. Mr Stood (Liberal) was downed in a straight fight, the Conservative candidate, Colonel Gadie, winning hv 1202.
