MOTOR TRAFFIC.
AN INTERESTING RECORD. An interesting record of traffic to the Waveriey races by the various modes of transport is shown in the following figures, which were taken on Labour Day: From New Plymouth there were 17 motor vehicles; carrying approximately 85 passengers; Inglewood, 3 —20; Stratford, 24—131; Eltham, 22—109; , Hawera, 66 —324; Manaia district, 11—49; Waitara, 7 34; Opunake district, 7 —36. Cars registered in outside counties were 23, carrying approximately 97, making a total of 180 cars, with a total of approximately 885 passengers. Included in this total were taxis and motor ’buses—New Plymouth, 3 taxis and 24 passengers; Stratford, 2 ’buses and 36 passengers; Eltham, 2 taxis and 12 passengers, also 1 motor ’bus carrying 12 passengers; Hawera, 8 taxis and 57 passengers, 2 motor ’buses and 38 passengers; Manaia, 1 taxi and 6 passengers; outside counties, 2 taxis and 11 passengers; Opunake, 1 ’bus and 12 ijasserigers. The New Zealand railways handled by their four morning trains from Hawera alone a total of 353 passengers. Comparing the fares, the return second class by railway was 5s 6d, first class return 8s; while the taxis fare was los return and ’buses 12s 6d return.
