CAR OVER BANK.

OCCUPANTS ESCAPE. At a quarter to nine last night a new Willys-Knight car, the property of Messrs Lysons, Foord and Keilar, went over a bank in the Manutahi Gorge, the two occupants fortunately escaping without serious injury. The car was being brought from Wanganui to Hawera, and was driven by Mr V. H. Goddard, who had with him Mr Rv Linton. When coming down the Manutahi Gorge the driver was dazzled by the lights of another oar. and got too far on to the soft side of the filling just below the “Devil’s Elbow,” with the result that the car went over the side, and after turning over three times came to rest on its side against a willow tree. Mr Goddard sustained a slight cut on his head and a bruised back, but Mr Linton, who had previously come safely through six motor accidents, availed himself of his experience and got down in the bottom of the car, where he was not injured by the rough passage.

Mechanics this morning hauled . the car up on to the road, and found that it was only slightly damaged. It was brought to Hawera under its own power.
