DAIRY PRODUCE CONTROL.
MEETING OF THE BOARD. At the last meeting of the board the iollowing business was transacted: Shipping Contract.—The arrangements made by the overseas delegation for the completion of a shipping contract with the Associated Shipping Companies for a period ending July 31, 1924, .were confirmed. The freight rate on butter has been reduced to 4s per box for the three years. For the first two years, commencing November 1, 1924, the freight rate on cheese is 29-32nds of a penny per lb and for the third year is 7-Bths of a penny per lb. On the basis of an export of 65,000 tons of butter and 65,000 tons of cheese, this represents 1 a saving cf £121,875 per annum for the first two years and £140,833 for the third year. lOn a percentage basis it is a reduction of 11.1 per cent, on butter and an average reduction for the three years of 10.8 per cent, oil cheese. Shipping Space.—This question is still giving the board a great deal of concern. Further allotments of space were arranged for shipments from Wellington and Auckland during the third week in November, which will considerably relieve the position. Exchange on Drafts. —Certain proposals are under consideration which may eventually somewhat improve the position. Laboratory.—The board waited upon the Prime Minister with reference to the establishment of a centra! laboratory for the dairy industry, and urged that this should be established within the next twelve months. Mr. Massey expressed himself as entirely in sympathy with the proposal.
