SUBMARINES

FOR AUSTRALIAN WATERS. TENDERS INVITED. , SECRECY ESSENTIAL. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. (Received Oct. 28, 11.55 a.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 28. The Minister for Defence (Hon. Bowden) announced that tenders for the construction in Britain of two modern submarine cruisers, with a cruising radius of 3000 iniles t have been called bv the Federal Ministry. The work of construction, it is considered, is too specialised to be carried out locallv. It is also doubted whether, owing to the secrecy attached to the plans and specifications, the British Admiralty would allow the construction from its plans to be undertaken in dockyards other than those with which it is in close toueh. When Air Bruce was’ in England it was estimated the cost of each submarine would be £350,00.
