LABOUR DAY SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. 5- ere was a good att «iidance of the public at the show grounds yesterday afternoon, when the Hawera Amateur Athletic dub’s first sport®, meeting of the season was held. An interesting programme of events was got off, and the chief feature, a road cycle race over a distance* of 17 miles, was won by J- P. Cronin, of Wanganui, on a handicap of 8 minutes, with R. Tippetts, of- Hawera, on 3 minutes, putting up the best time. The meeting was very well conducted and reflected great credit on the officials and the secretary (Mr. W. ,(i. Smith fWanganui), Strain. 57min 40sec, 15. For actual time taken on the road Tippetts was the winner, with Head second and Brown, Dick, Signall and Cronin following in that order. The winner of the race. Cronin, finished with a. lead of about' 300 yards on Beaurepaire, who beat the third man, Head, by a similar distance,-but there was only about 8 yards between the fourth man, Moorhouse, and the fifth man, Dick.
