OBITUARY.

MR, JER VIS * GFOR GE. WELL KNOWN ON THE TURF. The death of Mr. J ervi-s- - George, aged 70, ofVChnata, who was one of the most prominent figures in the racing circles of the Dominion, occurred at the New Plymouth hospital yesterday. Always a keen sportsman, Mr. George had been a trainer-owner for at least half a century, and his passing will be regretted by all followers of the sport. Mr. George had been ill lor the fast two or three years.

Despite his advancing years Mr George took an active part in his training duties to the last. His success as a trainer and an owner is well known all over New Zealand, and some good performers on the turf passed through his hands during his long career. Resolution, which won the Taranaki Cup, was owned and trained by him. Among numerous other horses which he trained were Buzzard, Amourer, Paritutu, and more recently Hori and Alteration. Although he trained extensively for other owners, including Mr Newton King and the late Mr Arthur Standish, Mr George chiefly confined his efforts to his own horses.

Mr. George was born at New Plymouth. his father being a hotel-keeper, who eventually took up farming. He lived nearly the whole of his life in New Plymouth, residing the greater portion of that time at Omata. Mr. George leaves a wife and two children. —News.
