THE TRF.NTHAM MEETING. SOME BIG SURPRISES. DESCRIPTION OF THE RACES. (By Telegraph.—Special to Star.) W ELLINGTON, Oct. 25. fhe spring meeting at Trentham opened under fair conditions. Rain in the morning had deadened the track, ciiid showers later made, it on the heavy side. The racing throughout the day was full of interest, and some good finishes were fought out. Backers did fairly well until the last races, when long-priced outsiders scored. Lad*r Cavendish won the Wellesley Stakes very easily, and Musketoon, but for being bumped by Gold Light 50 yards from the post, might have won the Racing Club’s Handicap with a little more to spare. The electric timing clock was used for the first time with satisfactory .results. * J Runnymede, with 1256 tickets, BeaLight 904, and Standard 517 were the only ones backed to any extent in the Taita Handicap. Runnymede and Standard commenced smartly, and led from Berinthea, with Anthony slow to move. There was little change to the turn, where Berinthea retired. Anthony moved up to Runnymede, and won hard held by a length and a half from Standard, who was two lengths in front of Anthony.. Bed.con Light was a head away fourth, with Berinthea and Motion leading the remainder. The winner scored in easjv fashion, but Beacon Light looked the next best, despite the fact that he finished only fourth. The Wainui Handicap was a good betting race, Carpentier, with 528 tickets, being favourite. Quest, the actual winner, was at a little better than a double figure price. Quest, Printemps, Little River, and Soliform, were the first- to_slioiw out, bub Quest soon lost his place and Balck Ronald, Comical, • Trintemps, imperial Spark, and Soliform were the leading division round the top turn, with Happy Days and . Carpentier in the middle ol : the h fj d ‘ ' lunun £ for home, Black Ronald and Imperial Spark were in front or Comical and Printemps, with Carpentier closing up and Happy Days showing up on the outside. 'The leaders were done at the distance, and Carpentier shot into the lead with Quest coming fast on the outside. Quest maintained this run and .got up to beat Carpentier by three-quarters of a length. Happy Days was a length and a half away, third, and Comical was good fourth, followed by Imperii Spark, Printemps, ltouek, Soliform, Black Ronald and Kilfaire. Time, Quest atoned for some disappointments and a good deal of bad luck, and he .finished well enough to draw attention to his New Zealand Uup chance. - Carpentier also raced well, and Happy Days, in third place, had none of the luck in running. • Bonhomme and Dazzling Light both carried four figure investments in the Rimutaka Handicap. Then with a drop of £6OO 'came Clarinda and Giuement. Bonhommd, after being fractious at the barrier, was badly served at the start, and was soon at the tail-of the field. Racing round the top turn, Kurio led from Tinohari, Ma Boughal, Master Black, Dazzling Light and pronto, with three furlongs to go Ma Boughal was well clear of Kuhio, Tin-ohari, Matin Bell and Dazzling Light, and straightened up for hJme. Kuhio ranged up with Ma Boughal with Matin Bell, ' Tinohari, and Pronto handy, and the favourite in the centre of the field. In a good race for the post, Kuhio went on to win by two lengths from Tinohari, with Pronto half a length away third, and Matin Bell another ,length away fourth. The next to finish were Ma Boughal, Bonhomme. Dazzling Light, Panache, and Agitato. Kuhio, who fairly revelled in the going, won very nicely, while Tinohari again stayed on well. Pronto was also galloping on the finish. Bonhomme did very well to finish sixth, and but for the bad luck at. the start and in the running there is no doubt he would have been hard to beat. Dazzling Light, who disappeared suddenly in the straight, will soon do better. Gold Light with 1307 tickets in the Racing Club Handicap, ended up'with £3OO better favourite than Musketoon, for whom there was a decided last minute demand. After a drop of nearly 300 came Sunart and Merry Day. From a ; good start Diamond Ring .took charge' from Bumptious, Dominant, Gold Light, Sunart, Musketoon and Merry Day. Enthusiasm lost her place early, and was last out of the straight. Running to the mile post Dominant and Waetea took charge, the order of being much the same. Racing past the six furlong post Sunart, Musketoon, Merry Day and Gold Light closed up to the leaders, with Palestrina handy. At the straight entrance Dominant, Diamond Ring, Waetea, Palestrina, Gold Light and Musketoon was the order. Diamond Ring lasted the best of the leaders, but at the distance Musketoon and Gold Light came away and fought out a desperate finish, Musketoon winning by half a head. Diamond Ring was six lengths away third, just in front of Merry Day. Waetea, Sunart, Palestrina and Bumptious were next. Backers wanted nothing else but Santiago in the First Hurdles, hut there was good support for Miss Mickey and Koauau, with Brigadier Bill fourth favourite, carrying about half as much as ’ the favourite. The race was not a good one, as Koauau, Sir Wai, Brigadier Bill and Hyrax went away from the remainder from the start, and not one of the lastnamed made a serious attempt to overtake them. Brigadier Bill took the lead with half a mile to go from Koauau and Sir Wai, and landing first over the last fence, he went on to win by two lengths from Koauau, who was a similar distance in front of Sir Wai. Hyrax was a neck away fourth, and then came Santiago and Miss Mickey. The winner revelled in the going, and was well handled by L. G. Morris. He stayed on better than his earlier showings would suggest. Sir Wai jumped his fences in good stoyle, but did not stay ,arid it appeared that if Koauau had been allowed to stride along he would have made the winner’s task harder. Miss Mickey, ridden by A. Wormald, should do a lot better very soon.
The 11 starters for the Wellesley Stakes made a good display. Lady Cavendish with 1136 tickets was a comfortable, liberal-priced favourite, next in favour coming Shirley 924, Bank Draft 766, and Father O’Flynn 602. Lady Cavendish on the outside began smartly, and others prominent early in the race were Oreum, Kaiti and Cyrene. Bank Draft was handy to the leaders at the junction of the course proper, where Hvmestrason came through on the rails. Lady Cavendish went on to win very easily bv over three lengths from Father O’Flynn, who came with a late run and defeated Kaiti bv a head for second place. The Thorn, who began slowly, was a good fourth, and Shirley, Hymestrason, Oreum, Tiega and Bank Draft next. Royal Divorce was an almost even money favourite for the Shorts Handicap .with 1711 tickets, then coming
Motley 993, Reremoana 808 and Santonio 783. The eventual winner. Sir Geo. Clifford’s Firestick, returned a, dividend of well over a quarter of a century. The light was bad, and the held had covered over a furlong before the , leaders could be picked up as Civilform, Last Crust, Ares and Mot-, ley. They were still in front at'the turn, where Subjection, Peneus, Reremoaiia Royal Divorce had closed 'up. Santohio led Royal Divorce, Peneus and Reremoana at the distance, where Ecuador appeared and was apparently the winner, but Firestick came fast and defeated Seuador by a length and three-quarters. Sanson*o was a head away,, and a head in front of Martian Miss; Royal Divorce Reiemoana, Peneus and Subjection were next. The win was full of merit, for the filly, aided by her light weight in the heavy going, stayed on well. Ecuador made a good showing as did Martian Miss, while Motley on last year’s form was disappointing. The race will do Royal Divorce no harm. Subjection ran like a quitter. Gardenia _1460 tickets, Degage 1026 and Ilka 771 carried almost half the investments in the October Handicap. Treadwell, the winner, was the outsider, bar one of the field, returning a dividend of over half a century. Lipsol Wilderness, Ilka, Gardenia, Hallmark and Benin ure were the first to be picked up. At the turn Ilka was showing the way to Wilderness and Hallmark. Treadwell made a run in the straight ,and Wilderness went on with her, the pair fighting out the finish, Treadwell winning bv a head. Hallmark was a length and a quarter away third, then coming Willow Wai. Dubious, Rich Prize and. Ilka.
