£30,000 FINE FOR A BLOW.

A VEXED DUKE. While the present Duke of Devonshire was entertaining the King at Bolton Abbey some folks may have recalled a, story of the sixth duke and James IT. The duke, in the Royal presence, struck a servant, and was sentenced to pay a fine of £30,000.. Soon after he received a message from the King offering to mitigate the fine if it were paid promptly, to which he replied, “If your Majesty will allow* me a further delay I will play you double or quits for the amount.” Before the King could answer the revolution of 1688 occurred, and Devonshire escaped payment. -Samuel Pepys, in his diary, mentions that he found his front door open and kicked his cook-maid, and aimed a blow at her. He was vexed because a page-hoy saw him, but not for kicking the maid.
