The police tricked Dr. Frolireich, whom they suspected of having killed his father-in-law, Egyedi, a wealtliy Hungarian land owner, into a'confession of-murder, by pretending that. they, believed him innocent. After a few days a . detective suddenly came to Frohreich’s room, seized him by the shoulder-, and angrily exclaimed: “You are deceiving us. Did you murder vein-father-in-law ?” Frolireich was taken aback, and muttered something about his wife and small boy. The detective quickly called in the wife, telling her that her husband wanted to confess. The wife threw herself into her husband’s arms, laying, “Tell everything. I will forgive.*' Frolireich brokenly described how he went to his miserly father-in-law to ask him to help one of his daughters, who was a penniless widow. Egyedi refused to help, goading Frohreich into a fight, in which the old man was strangled. Horror-stricken, Frohreich picked ub a razor in order 1 o commit suicide bv cutting his wrist arteries, whan he thought- of a plan of cutting Egyedi’s wrist to make it appear that the latter had committed suicide. The plan was apparently successful, as a doctor granted a certificate • f suicide, but the police were suspicious.
