SOMETHING SINISTER.

THE GOVERNMENT'S POSITION. IN CAMPBELL CASE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oof. 22, 3 p m LONDON, Oct. 21. The question as to how liberals will vote in constituencies where there is a straight fight between Conservatives and Labourites, is -attaining increased importance. The Liberal headquarters issued a. statement in reply to a request as to whether they are advising the rank and file that, in such cim on instances, they decline to dictate. They add that indignation at the Labourites’ tactics in forcing an election and venomously attacking Liberalism has stiffened the Liberals throughout the country. it will be surprising if the Labourites’ hopes for Liberal support are not disappointed utterly. Air. Lloyd George, opening a motor tour of Lancashire, declared that the Liberals must be true to the noblest traditions of John Bright and Gladstone and vote for sane progress and against financing anarchy. Chaos was rampant in both Russia- and elsewhere. Air. Harvey, speaking in South Shields, gave a new turn to the Campbell controversy. He alleged it was untrue that Sir Patrick Hastings, as stated in the House of Commons, did not know wliat reasons Sir Travers Humphreys intended to give in the Police Court for the withdrawal of the ease. On the contrary Sir Patrick Hastings and Sir Travers Humphreys’ secretary conferred at the Garrick Club. Sir Patrick Hastings took his pen and deleted the four grounds Sir Travers Humphreys desired to include in the announcement of the withdrawal. Air. Harvey added: “We do not know half the facts. There is something sinister to bide. The Government resorted to an election in the hope of throwing sufficient dust in the electors’ eyes to prevent enquiry.”
