“NO PUBLICITY”
ARMY OFFICER’S LETTER. DESCRIBED AS SHOCKING. DEGREE GR,ANTED TO WIFE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 22, 11.25 a.m. LONDON, Oct. 21. A strange divorce case is reported wherein a husband offered his wife evidence of infidelity justifying the divorce if he were assured there would be no publicity, as this would necessitate his resigning his commission in the Army. Captain Edsell, Hampshire Regiment, wrote to his wife’s -solicitors: “My letter to my wife, written, at the Waldorf Hotel confessing infidelity, must- he returned immediately in order that I may destroy it and send you another. I wish to make the letter shorter.” Edsell also threatened to defend the action if the name of his regiment was published. Mr. Justice Horridge described the letter as shocking and granted the wife a decree. Edsell’s effort to interfere with the discretion of the press naturally resulted in the utmost publicity.
