BENEFIT CONCERT.

AN EXCELLENT PROGRAMME. PIANO TO BE PURCHASED. The programme submitted at the concert in aid of funds to purchase a piano for the Hawera Old People’s Home last night wo-uld have done credit to a big city professional production. Lovers of' variety were amply catered for and every item without exception was encored. All the artists, members, of the orchestra, and the staff of the theatre gave their services gratuitously., and as a, result there is no doubt that the piano for the Old People’s Home will he purchased. Inmates of the home were present as the guests of the organisers.

Messrs. L. A. Bone and F. Gillandons mentioned that thanks were due to Messrs. J. Renwick and R. P. Morrissey for the splendid maimer in which they had organised the concert for the benefit of the old people, who appreciated _ the thoughtfulness at the back of tlieir efforts. Concert parties had found it .very difficult to give entertainments at the Old People’s Horne without a piano, and the speakers felt sure that the audience, townspeople generally, and the inmates of the home in particular, would appreciate the splendid services rendered by these gentlemen.

The programme opened with a spirited march, “Here They Come,” by Moosman’s- orchestra. It would invidious to make comparisons in view of the fact that the whole programme was magnificent and each artist acquitted himself or herself admirably. Encores were the order of the evening, and the audience were like Oliver Twist, always wanting more. IT in the future the organisers persuade the artists and various officials to submit the same programme for any deserving organisation there is no doubt that the Opera House will be literally packed to the ceiling. The vocal solo. “The Old Green Isle.” by Mrs. R, Drynan, was very much appreciated, as was her encore number. “Piccaniny of Aline, Good-Night.” Airs. Drynan’s contralto voice was heard to great advantage. AJi-Xs E. Goodson's pianoforte solo. “Lieberstraum,” together with her encore j number, was submitted in a manner pleasing to everyone. One of the chief attractions of the (‘veiling was 1 the various items by Air. AY. G. Simpson, who was 'recalled several times. Airs. AV. G. Strange was recalled for her Sliakexpeai ia.u recitation alter a dramatic rendering of extracts [nun “Cleopatra’' and “Macbeth.'’ Tlio ’Cello solo. “Ycrreuse.” by Air. id. X. Lester, was played in an artistic manner, and as a recall lie played the popular “Rosary.” 3SI iAlison Goodson, a tiny tot of Ax. was encored repeatedly for Iter recitation. “I couldn’t help it, could I ? ’ Aiiss. (’. Ilcilly was heard to great advantage in several solos;. r J he humorous sketch, “Choosing Sunday's Dinner,” would make a delight!ul evening's performance in itself. Airs. Strange and Air. R. A’ivian acquitting tliemolvos in a manner that would have been regarded as more than creditable in a city performance. “The Dutch Kiddies” by Moosman s orchestra, which opened the second half of a splendid programme, was followed by a solo. “AVaiata. Maori.” by Air. Claude C. Aloss. a new singer to Hawera whose service?; will undoubtedly he called upon on many future occasion?;. He was repeatedly recalled. Airs. Goodson’s -oios were also greatly appreciated. The pianists for the evening were Alisses D. Reillv, E. Ponsford. E. Good-son, Airs. Lester and Mr. J. Remvielc.
