MEMORIAL ARCH.
CONTROL TRANSFERRED. TO BOROUGH COUNCIL. The Hawera Peace Memorial Committee, having concluded its functions, last- night handed over to the Borough Council the care of the memorial arch and a cash balance at the bank of £ll4 14s 4d. In a letter before the Council it was . that _ the .Memorial -Committee desired to .convey to’ the Council its hearty, appreciation of the co-operation of the Council in making the. arch a, c r. e d,it- the town and district, anct J wished to, specially, j thank, the .Council fc-r. the very satisfactory manner in which the surroundings had been attended to, ' The committee also requested the Council to see that the e*ebti'ic light which showed up the memorial pt night was - kept- in working order for all time, as it.was considered to be- o,ne of the most satisfactory a(rangerhents connected witli the nieinbrial. The -Mayor,.- in moving that the request be acceded to, ; said he did übt think the Council. were taking any risk. They had ti> keep the grounds in order, and naturally they would have to keep the arch in repair. Coujicillor Burdekin,' in seconding, said it wa 3 only prqper that the local authority should keep the arch in repair-. - . The motion was carried.
