EDUCATION BOARD.
AtONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki Education Board was held yesterday. Air S. G. Smithy AI.P. (chairman;, presided, and there were also, present: Messrs H. Dampsey, R. Alasters, M.P., R. J. Deare, H. J. Eaves, A. Lees ana P. J. H. White. The board decided to apply for an increase in the grant towards the Kent Road School, with a view to providing a room of sufficient size to take all the children of the Kent Road district. Subject to the senior inspector’s report being favourable, the architect was instructed to prepare plans preparatory to making an application for a grant for additions to the Oxiunake School. The question of subsidy on contributions made by the settlers of Manaia towards a fencing scheme was the subject of correspondence from the Department, in which it was pointed out that, although the money was raised prior to the latest decision of the Department on the matter of subsidies, the expenditure was evidently not incurred until after that date, and m view of that it was stated that the committee should have been aware of the maximum subs.dy that could be obtained. The matter was referred to the chairman to confer with the Department in Wellington. The application of the Rahotu Committee for improved, accommodation was referred to the architect tor a report. DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOLS. A letter was received on behalf of the Manaia Committee, relative to the proposal to establish a district high school at Manaia. It was stated that a conference had taken place with the Board of Alanagers of Rawera Technical High School and a proposal made that the children he conveyed free of charge to and from Hawera so, that they might attend the Hawera School. This was being placed before the Department, but thq Manaia Committee intimated that in the event of the free conveyance not being -available they still desired to proceed with the application for the establishment of a district high school. The Board resolved that in the event of the conveyance of children to and from Hawera net being satisfactorily arranged, the Department be asked to expedite its reply to the application for the establishment of a district high school.
Last night word was received from the Department that they had agreed to grant the request of' the Manaia people for a district high school, having definitely turned down the scheme for get-tin» the children to the Hawera Technical. High School. Correspondence was also reeeived in connection with the proposal to establish a district high school at Oonnake, iudicating that- the requisite number of scholars for the establishment, of such a school was available, and the parents had signed the undertaking that thev wou'd attend if the school was commenced.
