Mr Morris MeCarten, the well-known Taranaki horseman, is expected to arrive in Auckland to-day from Sydney. Messrs H. D. Forsyth, A. Morton, and J. R. Corrigan. M.P., were passengers by the mail train south this morning.
A recent meeting of the Eltham Scout- Committee appointed Mr] C. Harrison a*; secretary to the committee and Mr. L. Page as assistant scoutmaster to- the Boy Scouts. Mr R. A. Large’s resignation from the Taranaki Land Agents’ Association was received with regret at the annual meeting of the association at Stratford yesterday, and a resolution of appreciation of his valuable services was placed on record.—News.
A compliment- was paid to Mr H. R. Scott for his assistance to the work of the Takou-Mangamingi Sheep Dog Club The president said Mr Scott-ha! always come to their help • when in difficulty, and he was strongly of opinion that no one was better qualified to act as a judge. The excellent and capable service 1 endered by Mr A. Walker as judge at the dog trial meeting of the TakouMangamingi Club in February was acknowledged by the annual meeting of the members yesterday. A m t * ie of the meeting of the laranaki Rugby Union Management Committee held last evening. Air A F Nielson made eulogistic reference to the ability and tact displayed by the chairman, Mr J. McLeod, in discharging u - < ? utl *- s ’°f his office, as the result of which the most harmonious relations had existed at the meetings of the committee throughout the year Air Nielson’s motion to record a fitting appreciation of Mr AlcLeod’s services was seconded by Air W." B. Fearon (president) and adopted by acclamation. At the annual meeting of the TakouMangamingi Sheep Dog Trial Club »^ alt y appreciation was expressed of the great and cordial assistance rendered by Mrs A. Boddie and Airs A. Cray on the occasion of the annual concert. The president (Air Bunn) said that the assistance had: taken a load oft the shoulders of the committee at a time when they were in a difficulty, and these ladies made all the arrangements for the supper. It was most timely and helpful. A very useful institution in the country districts is the sheep dog trial club, and to ensure the efficient running of the clubs the honorary secretaries are necessary, and too often their good work is not given the recognition which is their due. Acknowledgment of the good work of the K/i ™ Takou-Mangamingi » Club (Air A. Stannard), who nas just retired, was given at the annua! meeting yesterday. A member stated that no one could have given more careful attention to the work of the club and had been more helpful at the annual meeting. The motion was unanimously carried. Our Manaia correspondent writes: The citizens of Manaia and district willyegret to hear of the death of Mr William Cunningham, which took* place at liis residence. Normanby road, Manaia, yesterday. The late Mr Cunningham was 84 years of age. He was born in County Down, Ireland, and came to New Zealand in the wear 1864 and landed at Nelson. Shortly afterwards lie came to Taranaki and has been a resident of Taranaki ever since. Nn the early days lie belonged to the militia formed at- Huirangi, and later on at New Plymouth. He took part in several disturbances -with the Maoris. He married Miss Alexander, of Nelson in the year 1873, and came to farm at Manaia 19 years ago on the Normanbv road. The deceased, was of a kind and retiring nature, and was a good neighbour and friend, and also- a good kind parent. He leaves a widow and sax surviving sons and three daughters. One son made the supreme sacrifice in the late war. The citizens of Manaia and district extend to the widow and family their deepest sympathy in their sad loss. The funeral will take place tomorrow at 1.30 p.m.
