Congratulatory references to the success of the Hawera Hospital Board’s committee (Messrs Gilianders, Campbell and Haggett), whose efforts had resulted in the speedy . approval by the Minister of the plans for the new hospital, were made* at the board meeting to-day by Mr E. A. Washer. The chairman (Mr F. Gilianders) said that Dr. Valintine had informed him that they could call for tenders as soon as they liked. “Tenders will he advertised for in about 10 days,” said the chairman to a Star reporter. A further indication of the steady increase in the number of patients treated in the Hawera Hospital was given in the medical superintendent’s report- to the Board to-day, when it wa.s shown that admissions for the six months, ending September 30 last totalled 4-03. as compared with 321 for the corresponding period of last year. A valuable endowment of 100 acres of land was years ago set aside in the W annate Plains, Taranaki, for holders the New Zealand Military Cross. This was subsequently handed over to some other purpose. As only five survivors each draw £lO per annum, and these are all over -70, the once-coveted distinction is not a strain uoon the resources of a grateful country. Jack Dempsey, the boxer, who is now appearing jn cinema pictures, has just undergone an operation to his nose A portion of his ear was grafted on the bridge to give hie nose a more classic outline for cinema purposes.
The' steamer Ulimaroa on Wednesday had an assorted and very lively cargo from Sydney. In addition to passengers, crew and general cargo, she carreid six well-known racehorses, five lions, two tigers, a case of anteaters, six cases of monkeys, and a ease of walrus.
The seasonal epidemic of measles has been at its height in Levin during the past few weeks, hut is now on, the decline. No fewer than 105 children were absent from- the Levin School throughout the period. At one Wanganui suburban school 200 absences were caused by the epidemic, .which is fdill attacking the children. A good number of South African veterans turned up at the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening, the business being to place their names on the Dominion roll of membership. Mr O. Crawford occupied the chair. Jt was decided to reorganise ‘'he local branch, and the following officers were elected:—-President, Veteran Hay-MeKenzie; committee. Veterans Haybittle, Renwick and Hamilton; secretary and treasurer, C. S. Mahonev. The committee will meet the last Friday in every month. A motion of condolence to Mrs Easton, widow of the late president. Veteran Geo. Easton, wa.s carried, the veterans standing in silence. All veterans who. have not handed in their names for the Dominion roll are requested to do. so at once and join up with the local brack.
Mr Humphrey Bishop, accompanied by his touring manager, Mr George Box. left for Australia on IjT-idny futile Ulimaroa. The company leave from the Bluff on November 1. It is highly gratifying to know that Mr Bishop thinks so much of New Zealand talent that he is taking the following Maorilanders to Australia with his company : Miss Ngaire Phipson (Wellington), Miss Evadne Royle (Wellington). Miss Zelda Bailey (Auckland), 0 MiDan Flood (Auckland).
