The crowd at the cricket match greeted Chapman with cheers when he went to the crease, and there was great expectancy. The Englishmen batted most attractively. Many daring singles were stolen by the visitors. Kilner made powerful strokes without much apparent effort. The crowd good-naturedly indulged in a little barracking at the expense of Douglas. Gilligan exhibited a fine, free sweeping style, and hit a ball to mid-off that lamed one fieldsman, who was forced to retire.- Sandham used his feet well, and showed partiality for the late cut..
