OPERA HOUSE—TO-NIGHT. “THE MEANEST MAN IN THE WORLD.” Splendid character delineation in a wide variety of roles marks the screen production of George M. Cohan’s “The Meanest Man in the World,” the First .National picture which opens with an all-star cast at the Opera House tomght. When the hero goes to a- tenement determined to eject a tenant for non-payment of rent, he takes care of the tenant’s baby instead. When he sets out to collect a bill from one J. Hudson, of Hudsonville, lie grits his teeth and determines to get the money or mercilessly foreclose. But when he meets J. Hudson and learns that her first name is Jane, ho softens again. Bert Lytell has the leading male role, and Blanche Sweet, as Jane Hudson, gives the screen one _of the most sympathetic characters oi her career. The supports include a Century comedy, ,*‘Taxi! Taxi!’’ a real mirth producer, the seventh episode of “Hurricane Hutch,” and the latest Topical Budget and the Graphic. GRAND THEATRE,, TO-NIGHT. “EXCITEMENT.” Laura La Plante makes a charming bow to the public in her initial starring vehicle, “Excitement,” the Universal photoplay which opens to-night at the Grand Theatre. In this hectic world of faddism and realism when so many motion picture producers are making their pictures top-heavy with sombre drama it is refreshing to see a picture that presents a fascinating chapter from life’s lighter side. ' ‘Excitement’ ’ lives up to its title and entertains with thrills and laughs. You don’t have. to. burden yourself wit'll worry about what’s going to happen to the sweet heroine and wondering when the hero is going to push the villain over a cliff so- the fadeout can be a pretty “clinch” scene. There is none of that melodrama. in it. It is farce comedy personified, crammed full of laughs.' - The supports include the seventh eoisode of “Hurricane Hutch,” “Slim Sommerville in “Keep Healthy,” and the latest International News.
