Lieut. R. Steele left Hawera this morning for Palmerston North, to which town he has been promoted. Mr, F., Mills, who has been appointed judge of the Ayrshire cattle at the -Auckland Show, left for that city this morning. It i.s the intention of Air. Mills to put in a week or two with the society m the northern district as demonstrator. Mr E. J'. Judd, who has been secretary and store manager.for the Riverdale Co-op. Dairy Company for the past 10 years, is retiring from the position early in the new year. After a wellearned holiday Mr judd intends taking up an importing business on his own account. The Daily Express, apropos of the Duke and Duchess of York’s visit to Kenya, and Prince Arthur of Connaught’s visit to India, says Australia has not been forgotten. It will be no surprise if a Royal Governor-General is installed in succession to Lord Forster, says a London cable. Last evening, by the mail train, Mr J. A. DuffilL and Mr C. M. Haggett returned to Hawera. from 'Wellington. Mr Duff ill has been on a visit to the W airar-apa on <lai:,v factory business, and took the opportunity of going on to Wellington in connection with plans for the new hospital. Mr Haggett was a delegate to the Conference of Hospital Boards, but was detained a few days longer on hospital affairs. He spent a few days in Palrnertson North with relatives. News was received in Matamata on Saturday morning of the death at Okauia at the age of about 80 years of a native named Keena Taiporutu, commonly known as Kemp. The deceased was really a native of Bulls, where he held considerable land interests, but he had been living ' at Okauia for nearly 20 years. He was a loyal Maori, having served under Major Kemp with the Queen’s forces in the Maori War, participating in fighting in the Wanganui district. He leaves a wife, three sons, and a daughter. Two sons served in the pioneer battalion in the late war, one being killed.
