REMARKABLE POSITION.

DEMONSTRATION AGAINST GOVERNOR. . BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT ' (Received Oct. 16, 11.5 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Oct. 15. A remarkable situation prevails at Beira, a Portuguest port on the east coast, where the whole of the business has been brought to a standstill and shipping is held up. This blockade has been imposed by a crowd of dissatisfied farmers aucl townspeople who have demanded that the Governor take certain steps, chiefly in the direction of repealing - taxation. It has been suggested that if he is unable to do so he should appoint a substitute who would. Taking umbrage at this suggestion, tlie Governor refused to reply, whereupon the demonstrators brought business to a standstill with a view to enforcing their demands. Except for uproar at a meeting by a few soldiers the demonstration was orderly. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
