SPEECH BY LORD BURNHAM. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Oct. 16, 11.30 a.m. CAPETOWN, Oct. 15. A unique event in the history of South African journalism took place when the first general meeting of the South African section of the Empire Press Union was held under the presidency of Lord Burnham. A representative gathering of journalists was present from all parts of the Union and Rhodesia Lord Burnham, replying to the Mayor’s speech of welcome, dwelt on the influence the Empire Press Union had in improving the recognition and status of representatives of the press, from its first conference in London in 1909 and the second at Ottawa in 1920. He hoped that the visit to Australia in 1925 would he organised on a scale which would demonstrate the nosition the press held in the world. "He welcomed heartily and endorsee! .Mr. Hertzog’s speech when he pleaded for brotherhood and co-operation within the British commonwealth, and if the visit of the Parliamentary delegates had resulted in nothing more tfmn those words it had been justified. —Reuter.
