SCHOOL ATHLETICS.

♦ TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL STEEPLECHASE. Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the opening of the Hawera Technical High School’s summer athletic season yesterday., when the senior and .junior annual steeplechases were held. The starting and finishing points for both events was the old cannon in the vicinitv of the tea. kiosk in King Edward Park, where a gathering of spectators, including the majority of the school’s girl students, evinced keen interest in the proceedings. Among those present was the Mayor (Mr L. A. Bone). The headmaster, Mr A. Gray, assisted by Messrs W. Thonv's and A. Tugwell, of the school staff, capably supervised the necessary arrangements, and the excellent discipline maintained allowed the large numbers of competitors to be marshalled and started from their respective handicaps with perfect organisation. Evidence of the fine spirit of sportsmanship prevalent in the school was given by . the large entries, the events being contested by practically every member of the respective divisions. In the junior event, twenty-six competitors faced the starter, the two limit men (4-lmin.) getting away at 2.15 p.m. Commencing in an easterly direction, the course turned north outside the road, crossing Glover road and the Park gates and along Camberwell road, crossing Glover road and the railway line, thence across country to Nolantown. returning to the Park' via Glover road and Camberwell road. The distance ig estimated at a little under 3 miles. R. Keys, or' thejimit, was first home, his running time being 16min. 30sec. D. Lennon, on the same mark, was second, 30 seconds later, and B. Campbell (handicap Imin.), whose time was 16min., ran in third. Campbell recorded fastest time. In the junior championship the placed runners, all of whom started from scratch, were C. Sturrock, 16min., 1; G. Nicholas, 1/jmin. 15sec., 2; 0. Shield, 17min. 45see., 3. The senior event commenced at 3 p.m., when the first starter of the field of 46 set out with a 4£ minutes’ handicap. This course pro ceded west to Waihi road, thence via Turuturu and Glover road.=, and followed the junior course from the point where it first crossed the railway line. The distance is estimated at approximately 31 miles. Warren (bdep. 4min) was first in, his actual time 'being 22min 30«ec; W. Amon (4min) running second 15 seconds later; and W. Millan (3min) finished third, his actual time being 22min losee. Fastest time was recorded by P. Coleman, who coveied the distance from scratch in 20min losee, securing first championship honours; I.
