Dame Nellie Melba bade farewell to the operatic stage at a gala performance of “La Boheme” in His Majesty’s Theatre, which was packed by a demonstrative gathering. Speeches were delivered .by / Mr S. M. Bruce (Federal Premier) and the Lord Mayor, eulogising tlie diva’s magnificent stage record and her services to Australia. Dame Melba, who was deeply affected, concluded, her thanks with God bless you all.” The ceremony ended with the Lord Mayor handing her a cheque for £IS,OOO, the result of her appeal on behalf of limbless soldiers.
